I’ve been thinking about what it means to be effortless. Which inevitably lead me to researching hair for the mere fact that it requires maintenance, ie. effort. While culling and curating I realised that effortless hair didn’t necessarily mean short crops per se.
I saw a common thread that resonated with me and this was it:
The photos depicted an intentional lack of being composed – a lack of being posed or styled. But more specifically, the subject and the hair wasn’t over-identifying with a style or belonging to anything but itself. Some haircuts were almost unrecognizable, non-descriptive, not belonging to any movement or social commentary – bland.
But this resonated especially:
If the hair was not belonging to any particular style, it was offset with an undetected confidence and presence in the subject. As if they were saying ‘this is what I want’ not this is what I should have.
