Just when you think it’s another visually enviable arty or artsy, over styled or wannabe artistic sensibility space, this one, you almost miss.
Can you spot it?
If not, here’s what it is:
- it’s personalised without saying so,
- there’s no attribution to any artistic achievement,
- there’s no bragging,
- there’s no artistic clichés.
It’s a cultivated, personalised and individualised artistic space that, when inspected closely, you actually see the bits or artefacts that the owners made for memory, identity or self-expression — except they treat it like a non-branded artefact. The owner’s individuality is blended into the overall cultivation but absolutely informs the composition — it’s just done unpretentiously. It’s like it’s not for show except for the homebody who inhabits it, the work-from-home creative who doesn’t admit it or the unfettered attitude of an owner or family member who doesn’t even notice they live in a colourful, richly diverse environment.
Here are a few favourites that spell ‘artistic cozy’ to me:
A caveat – these are not just interior spaces, but include all manner of objects, surface design, and an outerior and even clothing that speak to this unsubscribed sensibility.
Nothing says individual like handmade ceramics
Playful but not trending
Stylishly aware but not following
Curated yet unrecognisable
The labels are trendy but the urge to sartorialize with bold colour is individualistic
A brilliant example of not even trying
The stripes look retro and inherited or hand-sewn. The comic artwork needs no explanation
A touch of obvious personal direction
A minor detail, but imagine more of this sensibility around the space
A playful and personalised expression of existence
Conclusion: Is artistic cozy just colourful and slightly copycat?
I don’t think it is. If you’re not convinced perhaps take a further look on my curated board.
It feels like play but mostly it stands out as not following, unsubscribed and completely independent.
It’s adding to the colour conversation, it doesn’t shun any urge to curate with deliberateness and it undoubtedly sartorializes except there is a subtle distinction. It says “it’s mine”, “it belongs to me”.
If you liked this list, you’ll love this board.
